The Brücher – Mires in the Hunsrück Mountains examplified by the conservation area „Hangbrücher near Morbach”

Abstract: The slope mires in the Hunsrück are called „Brücher“ or „Hangbrücher“ and are examplified by the Hangbrücher conservation area near Morbach. Prerequisites for the forming of mires on the slopes of the Hunsrück-Maincrest are the lithologic and petrographic conditions as well as the rainy and cool climate. Corresponding with the water- and nutritive supply as well as with the thickness of the peat layer, plant communities such as transitional mires, “Kleinseggenrieder”, heather and mirewood appear. The marginal areas of these moors are characterized by heather and birch-mirewoods. Here and there spring-meadows and alder-swampwoods appear. Birch-beech-oakwoods change over to beechwoods which are the catchment basin of these mires. The mosses found here are of significant meaning in nature conservation. Knowledge of specialized animals in these mires is still incomplete. The mires are endangered by direct and indirect disturbance of the water regime. Considerable damage had been done but they are not destroyed yet. The principle of the development of the conservation area ”Hangbrücher bei Morbach” is the protection and re-establishment of favourable ecological properties. Restoring water into the mires is of highest priority. Where vegetation is concerned, the aim is to reverse previous plantings of species not typical of the region. Conflicts arise between the goals of nature reservation and the claims of forestry and the taking of drinking water from the area around the mires. For the optimum protection of these precious mires, a step by step concept of protection and development is absolutely necessary. For such a concept there is a serious lack of comprehensive basic research about these mires.Zusammenfassung: Die Hangmoore in den Wäldern des Hunsrückhauptkammes werden im Hunsrück „Brücher“ bzw. „Hangbrücher“ genannt. Diese Brücher sind am Beispiel des Naturschutzgebietes (NSG) „Hangbrücher bei Morbach“ beschrieben. Voraussetzung für die Moorbildung an den Hängen des Quarzitrückens sind die wasserstauenden periglazialen Schuttdecken sowie das niederschlags- und nebelreiche kühle Klima in den Höhenlagen. In den Mooren finden sich entsprechend der Wasser- und Nährstoffversorgung und der Mächtigkeit der Torfschicht die Pflanzengesellschaften der Zwischenmoore, Kleinseggenrieder, Moorheiden und Moorwälder. Den Randbereich der Moore kennzeichnen Moorheiden und Birken-Bruchwälder. Vereinzelt treten Quellfluren und Erlen-Sumpfwälder auf. Birken-Buchen-Eichenwälder leiten über zu den Buchenwäldern der Moor-Einzugsgebiete. Herausragende Bedeutung für den Naturschutz hat die Moosflora. Die Kenntnis der Tierwelt der Brücher ist noch lückenhaft. Gefährdungen der Moore entstehen vor allem durch Störungen des Gebietswasserhaushaltes. Leitbild der Entwicklung des Naturschutzgebietes ”Hangbrücher bei Morbach” ist die Sicherung und Wiederherstellung moorbegünstigender Standortbedingungen. Höchste Priorität hat die Wiedervernässung in den Mooren. Vegetationsbezogene Maßnahmen zielen vor allem auf die Umwandlung heute standortuntypisch bestockter Wälder. Aus diesem Naturschutzziel ergeben sich Konflikte mit den Nutzungsansprüchen der Forstwirtschaft und der Trinkwasserentnahme im Umfeld der Moore. Ein gestuftes Schutzkonzept für die Moore des Hunsrücks in ihrer Gesamtheit ist Voraussetzung für den optimalen Schutz der wertvollsten Moore.
